چکیده

The transmission behavior of a quantum point contact in a magnetic field is calculated, exhibiting in detail the influence of intersubband scattering. In contrast to the commonly known reduction of backscattering by a magnetic field, it is shown here that a weak field can cause increased backscattering. Nevertheless, the present results serve to illustrate that backscattering can occur without any effect on the conductance quantization, which is explained by an indirect compensation mechanism.

Conductance Quantization in a Periodically Modulated Quantum Channel: backscattering and mode mixing

It is known that the conductance of a quantum point contact is quantized in units of 2e2/h and this quantization is destroyed by a non-adiabatic scatterer in the point contact, due to backscattering. Recently, it was shown [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 137 (1993)] that taking many non-adiabatic scatterers periodically in a quantum channel, the quantization can be recovered. We study this conductance qu...

Soft Disorder Effects in the Conductance Quantization in Quantum Point Contacts: Indirect Backscattering Statistics

The breakdown of conductance quantization in a quantum point contact in the presence of random long-range impurity potential is discussed. It is shown that in the linear response regime a decisive role is played by the indirect backscattering mechanism via quasilocalized states at the Fermi level; this can provide much higher backscattering rate than any direct backscattering process. For the r...

Recovery of quantized ballistic conductance in a periodically modulated channel.

For a periodically modulated electron channel, conductance quantization characteristic of a simple quantum point contact is recovered. The value of the quantized conductance is, however, no longer a monotonically increasing function of energy. Comparison with the band structure of the corresponding infinite channel shows a direct correspondence between the index of the conductance plateau and t...

Mesoscopic fluctuations of conductance of a helical edge contaminated by magnetic impurities.

Elastic backscattering of electrons moving along the helical edge is prohibited by time-reversal symmetry. We demonstrate, however, that an ensemble of magnetic impurities may cause time-reversal symmetry-preserving quasielastic backscattering, resulting in interference effects in the conductance. The characteristic energy transferred in a backscattering event is suppressed due to the Ruderman-...

Conductance, surface traps, and passivation in doped silicon nanowires.

We perform ab initio calculations within the Landauer formalism to study the influence of doping on the conductance of surface-passivated silicon nanowires. It is shown that impurities located in the core of the wire induce a strong resonant backscattering at the impurity bound state energies. Surface dangling bond defects have hardly any direct effect on conductance, but they strongly trap bot...
